Author of six non-fiction books (on human rights, criminal justice, and sports), The Deadly Tools of Ignorance: A Debs Kafka Mystery is my debut mystery novel. Aside from writing, I'm a Professor of Politics and Director of the Legal Studies Program at the University of San Francisco. I've taught at six other universities, and been a researcher at several non-profits, including the Vera Institute of Justice. I've been a radio talk host in Boston and San Francisco. I was educated at the University of Pennsylvania, Penn State University, and the University of Strasbourg. I received a Fulbright Award to teach at the University of Colombo in Sri Lanka, and two MacArthur Grants. I'm writing the next novel in the Debs Kafka mystery series: Amsterdamned. I work in San Francisco and live in Mill Valley, California.
