Richard Helms ("Rick" to
his friends) is a forensic psychologist, working in the
courts of North Carolina. Unlike Gallegher, he has
been uncommonly successful at it. He specializes in
sex crimes, and is the most recent president of the
North Carolina Association for Management and
Treatment of Sex Offenders. He retired from an
amateur career in motorsports in June 1999, after
driving racing cars for 28 years, during which he
competed in over 300 races, with eight victories, one
championship, and no major injuries. He fills his spare
time these days with reading, gourmet cooking,
amateur astronomy, making guitars and violins, and
pulling for his beloved Charlotte Hornets. It is one of
his fondest dreams to have a comet named after him.
He lives in Weddington, N.C., with his wife Elaine,
their children Alex and Rachel, and their four cats.
