DEADLY TRAIL This is the book that introduces Tempe Crabtree, part Yanduchi, all woman, and Deputy Sheriff of Bear Creek. Tempe is raising her teen age son alone, being a widow. and planning her wedding to Pastor Hutch Hutchinson. The detectives involved in the murder of Andre Donato seem to have no further interest in the search for the guilt party after the arrest of Nick Two John . Tempe is sure he didn't do it and pursues investigating on her own. She must face the objections of the detectives, her superior officer, and her husband to be in her pursuit of the truth. DEADLY OMEN In this one Tempe is involved in a native Pow Wow and is becoming interested in learning about her heritage over the objections of her new husband Hutch. When a candidate for Princess of the Native American Pow Wow is found murdered the investigation takes Tempe into the Reservation. UNEQUALLY YOKED A child has disappeared, only to be found murdered. She has ties to the Yanduchi Reservation and when Tempe participates in a traditional ceremonial by a Yanduchi shama she finds the answer. A fascinating study of some of the Indian tradtions, as well as a very good mystery. INTERVENTION Tempe and Hutch are spending a week end at a mountain lodge. When an unexpected blizzard hits, the inn loses all electricity and telephones. The other guests include a famous actress, a writer hoping to sell his idea to her her current lover...a past lover...and her ex husband. When the actress is later found dead in a snow bank Tempe is called upon to help find out what happened. During her questioning of the other guests Tempe learns that any one of them had reasons to hate the unfortunate victim. As the group settles in to make do with a bad situation and Tempe secures the crime scene as best she can, it becomes clear she may be next on the guilty party's list. Add to that her husbands objection to her getting involved in any way. It is a couple of days before power is restored and phone service is back up. This is a very true to life mystery and sows the uncertainty of life during a mountain blizzard. I am sure there will be more Tempe Crabtree mysteries to follow and I will be looking forward to them. I included a brief summary of the first 3 here, but each one can stand alone as well. All reviews by Ginny Welding of NEB. GinnyW AKA Mawmaw |
