Storm Kayama goes into her Hawaiian law firm one day to find her uncle dead. Questions surround his death and Storm’s life is soon in danger. Can she avenge her uncle and heal her own childhood wounds?

‘Primitive Secrets’ is a novel rich in Hawaiian culture, as well as being an exciting mystery tale. This use of culture, through words, ideas and general references give a richer background to the novel, increasing the reader’s enjoyment of a setting that they may not know too well. At times, certain elements give a slightly paranormal or magical feel to the book, but for those readers who do not like this style; it is only a very small part.

At first, the novel may appear to be a cozy, but as it progresses, the action level is increased. It is hard to imagine that Hawaii can sustain such excitement! Her main character, Stormy Kayama, is well drawn and I have a feeling that Turrell Atkinson might like to use her again at some point. Overall, ‘Primitive Secrets’ is a very good first novel and a success for its author.
