Murder in Montparnasse is an entry in the Phryne Fisher mystery series. The book opens in St. Kilda in 1928. Memories of Phryne's time in Paris are brought up when Phryne dines at the Cafe Anatole. She is there as a guest of the chef who had invited her. The chef tells Phryne of his missing girlfriend and wants Phryne to use her skills as a private investigator to help him find his girlfriend.

Phryne's old friends, Bert and Cec are waiting as she returns home because they need her help. It seems that Bert and Cec were part of a group of seven Australian soldiers enjoying themselves in Paris in 1918. Ten years have passed and now two of their group are dead under suspicious circumstances. Bert and Cec are afraid they are next. Phryne realizes as she investigates that she also was in Montparnasse on the same day that the group of seven soldiers witnessed a murder. Phryne must hurry to solve the mystery before the murderer can kill again.

Another focus of the story is the upcoming nuptials of Phryne's lover, Lin Chung and the havoc it is wreaking with her life. I especially enjoyed Dot, Phryne's maid.

If you enjoy plots set in the 1920's era you will most certainly enjoy Murder in Montparnasse.
