Successful in finding a missing teen in Cat's-Paw, Inc., private detective Zachariah Smith must now find a person far more deadly -- the person who shot him, and a local doctor, outside the doctor's office during a citizen's rally against that doctor. Was the bullet meant for Zachariah or for the doctor? Or, by lucky happenstance, did the killer only have to use one bullet for two targets? And what was the telephone message all about that the doctor had left for Zachariah just before they were both shot, and before Zachariah had time to ask her any questions? Did she know whose life was in danger? Was she trying to warn Zachariah, or hire him to protect her?
