Two years after Danny O'Flaherty solved the murder of his cousin, Rose, he has taken up permanent residence in Dublin, teaching at a boy's school. He visits Ballycara often, fishing with Father O'Malley, drinking at Larkin's Pub, staying at Mrs. Slattery's Bed & Breakfast, "Shannonside," and flirting with Fidelma Muldoon.

Danny receives a note from Father O'Malley to come visit as soon as he can -- the Father wishes to tell him something. When Danny steps off the bus he's met with a frantic Fidelma -- Father O'Malley has been missing since early morning Mass. What Danny hoped would be a relaxed weekend of fly fishing turns deadly when he finds that Father's body laid out in the locked basement below the church.

Danny believes the key to the priest's murder is contained within the Second Sorrowful Mystery of the holy rosary -- The Scourging. Once again, the locals, and this time, even the gardai, ask Danny to find the murderer. Then a second body is found floating near the shore, suicide or murder?

Danny depends not only on his wits, but also on the luck of the Irish, to track down the murderer.
