Frank Quintana was born into a niche between two societies and accepted by neither. His father is Hispanic, his mother Anglo, and in a socially divided town like Halliburton, Texas, unless he can find a way out, he will be forever relegated to cutting grass and doing menial jobs. Then he discovers a way out. He discovers football. All he has to do is excel at the game, win a scholarship, graduate from college, become quarterback for a professional team, and marry Gina Westcott, the girl of his dreams. He knows he's on his way when he takes the Halliburton Hornets to a state championship, and signs with Nebraska.

Judge Wilson D. Westcott, Gina's father, has other plans. He sends thugs to break Quintana’s knees and to spirit Gina away to a private school up east. His thugs make the mistake of letting Quintana live. The ordeal ignites Quintana's fierce Latin desire for retribution.

From his hospital bed, Quintana tells his mother, "It's an evil thing, to destroy a young man's dreams." She says, "Frank, there are things more important than football." He tells her, "Mom, there’s nothing more important than football." What he means, there's nothing more important than marrying Gina and escaping from Halliburton.

Then, when Quintana has all but given up hope of getting his retribution, the murder of the Judge’s son, Thomas, sets into motion forces that will destroy either the Judge or Frank Quintana. Only one can survive.
